A Few Memories for the Books

Every day that I pick Avery Kate up from school I hug her and whisper in her ear, "Hi my baby! I missed you!" and she repeats it back. Today, she ran up to me, hugged me, and whispered in my ear, "Hi Mommy! I missed you!" It's the little things.

3, 9, 2 - As a two year old, AK is learning her numbers and how to count. Well, at least we know numbers, we just haven't quite figured out the order to say the numbers in. If she wants more than one of something she says, "Mommy, 3, 9, 2, pacis please." AKA, "Can I please have those 3 pacis?" We will get there!

A visit to Oakridge- Yesterday, David and I toured the ECC as parents; not as alumni or a faculty member, but as a future Oakridge parent. It was very surreal, exciting, and an absolutely amazing building. Mrs. Garton, my former pre-school teacher, led the tour. Memories of my time as a student at Oakridge came pouring back. I cannot wait for Avery to join us in this family tradition and to become an Oakridge Owl!

1st Day of School

AK headed off to school at Trinity for the first time! She was bright-eyed and bushy tailed.... until we told her Mommy and Daddy were not staying.

Daddy Gives the Best Pedicures

Anytime AK wants her nails painted, she will only let Daddy do it. Mommy doesn't do a good enough job, apparently.

San Fran Trip

To celebrate our 6th anniversary and my 30th birthday, Dave and I took a trip to San Francisco. We did everything! Seriously. A Napa visit (insert headache here), bike ride over the bridge, amazing dinners, shopping... you name it, we did it! Loved San Fran and can't wait to visit again one day.

Meanwhile, AK was loving life and loving being spoiled by her grandparents who took her to Munday to visit her cousins, Braylynn and Paige.

I will never forget this day... we were home alone, playing like normal. Avery Kate was wound up and had just finished dinner. I was sitting on the couch when she jumped on my lap. I remember saying to her, "Avery, be careful!" And right then, she slipped or stepped on her dress and landed on her nose on the coffee table. She started crying, I picked her up, put her to my shoulder, and hugged her thinking that her nose would be bruised but nothing like it was! I pulled her off my shoulder only to find blood spuing from her face. I immediately jumped up (truth, I think I yelled a bad word in shock, oops), ran to the kitchen to get towels, and panicked. Should I call 911? Do I drive her to the ER? David was in his weekly meeting so I called Martin and shared the scary story with him quickly explaining that her nose was cut open and I could definitely see her bone. His first thought was for me to take her to an urgent care close by, but then knowing that it was a scare on her face, he changed his mind and told me to take her to Cook Children's in Fort Worth. I buckled her into her carseat; somehow, she was calm at this point sitting nicely in her carseat. The blood had slowed. As I began to drive to the ER, I texted David knowing he wouldn't answer the phone if I called since he was in a meeting. "Call me. It's an emergency." In the meantime, I called my mom trying not to panic. Little did I know David had called me 3 times trying to get a hold of me. I called him back and immediately broke into tears. He was so calm, sweet and left work immediately to meet me at the hospital. When I arrived at Cook Children's in panic mode, I finally found a place to park and started to run inside only to quickly realize I had no idea where the entrance was. As pedestrians walked by, they looked at us in mere horror and I even remember one mom pulling her kid closer to her, scared. I asked a man where the entrance was to the ER. He immediately stopped traffic, walked me across the street, and showed me how to get in. Every single person at Cook Children's, from the front desk, to the nurses, to the techs, and doctors, went above and beyond to treat our little girl. They were patient, sweet, and reassuring. The worst part came when we had to hold her down for an x-ray and the stitches. 6 stitches, 2 doctors, a few techs, one child life specialist, a grandmother, a mom, and a dad later and we were headed home. Avery Kate was a true champ! After we got home, Auntie Sammie came over to visit and brought AK lots of treats and toys to cheer her up. DiDi came by with a "birthday cake" to cheer AK up. (No, it wasn't her birthday but she sure does love blowing out candles.) We are so grateful for our amazing family!

My dad always told me that boys liked scars because it showed them we were fearless. Let's hope he's right. ;)
